Bady Kebir, a member of the organizing committee, said: “We have managed to bring together 133 riders from 16 different countries.” It is worth noting that all the horses came from Jordan. According to the organizers, the race, more than the talent of the riders who were almost all beginners, tests their tenacity, their spirit of solidarity, and self-discipline.
This is the case of the 26-year-old Belgian Emeline Parmentier. She, after an accident in 2019 suffering an amputation of both legs, was able to compete in Jordan thanks to a saddle adapted to her disability. Parmentier stated, “After the accident, I said to myself: ‘I can’t walk. If I don’t walk, I won’t discover anything else.’ Riding a horse is like riding again.”
The aftermath of the race
This is not the first time that popular events have taken place in Jordan. Several movies have been shot in the majestic locations. It helped to boost tourism over time. But the coronavirus pandemic has been tragic for Jordanian tourism revenue.
The fact that this horse race, postponed by covid-19, has finally been able to take place. It is a symbolic first step towards a possible return to normalcy, according to tour guide Mohamed Saleem. He also added that “The pandemic affected us a lot and made us lose our income. I hope that this type of racing will again attract the attention of tourists and make them come back.”
